Ultimate Frisbee

Ultimate Frisbee made its debut as a spring sport at RSGC this year, with the Georgian Knights and the Branksome Frogs teaming up to form the co-ed FRIGHT.
While ultimate frisbee has been a CISAA sport for almost a decade, it has only been an extracurricular club at the College – mainly because there are already so many sports to choose from in what is already a short spring season.

Yet, between RSGC and Branksome Hall, there was so much interest – including 24 boys – that the schools had to create two teams: U16 and Senior. The schools practice together – one morning at the Branksome field and one morning at the University of Toronto field.

Athletics Director Steve Turner thinks it’s a great and unique opportunity for the boys to be on a co-ed team.

“It’s a great experience for them,” said Mr. Turner, who coaches the team along with RSGC Senior School teachers Sarah Jessani and Julie Girvan, plus three Branksome teachers. “There aren’t too many situations that give them the opportunity to compete on the same playing field. They’ve been very Georgian and polite.”

Grade 11 student Pierre-Christof Ashcherl, who took part in the club last year and is now a member of the team, sees the value of being part of a co-ed team.

“We have different skills than they do and they have different skills than we do,” he said. “Over time, we’ll make each other better and we’ll both make the team better. We’re starting to bond now. It’s a nice way to get to know another girls school.”

Ultimate frisbee is the first spring sport Pierre-Christof has played in the Senior School. He’s having a lot of fun, learning strategy and enjoying the exercise.

“I’m really enjoying it,” said Pierre-Christof. “It’s an environment that’s not too stressful, so I can still focus on schoolwork.”
