The U15 hockey team travelled to Halifax to play in the Armbrae Academy tournament and came back as champions. After six games in two days, the Knights defeated Sacred Heart 3-0 in the final.
It was a busy few days in Nova Scotia, between hockey and acting as tourists. Underneath a glorious sunny sky, the boys explored Peggy’s Cove and researched their ancestors’ arrival details at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21. And when they weren’t playing their own hockey, they got to go watch the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL!
To make their Halifax experience more authentic, the boys were billeted with local families. Both Jeff Betty and Griffin Cook, Class of 2021, stayed with Brad Langille and Kelly d’Eon, whose son attends Armbrae Academy and was also playing in the tournament. It was the second time the family has hosted Georgian boys and according to Kelly, she would do it again in a heartbeat.
“Honestly, the boys are such a delight,” she said. “I’ve billeted kids before and it’s never been as positive an experience as this. I don’t know if it’s your school or the area, but they’ve all been such good kids.”
Kelly and Brad have three kids and they live really close to the arena, so it’s fun for her kids and for the boys that they host. Kelly even went to many of the Knights’ games and cheered them on.
“Not when they were playing against us, of course,” she said. “But it was fun. It’s not like they had many fans travelling with them!”
Griffin had a great time in Halifax – especially winning the tournament – and said staying with his host family was really comfortable.
“They were so nice,” he said. “It was good knowing that they cared about us – they were acting like my parents. They made it feel like home.”
