Royal St. George’s College is a great school and that greatness is evidenced by the boys we ‘grow up’ into great young men, who go into the world and make their communities better.
Welcome to Royal St. George’s College!
My parents chose this school for me for the same reason I was so proud to bring my own sons to Royal St. George’s College. I am a graduate of the Class of ‘86. This is a school where character, manners, kindness, and the pursuit of excellence are woven in everything we do; indeed, what RSGC has been doing for over 60 years now.
I proudly became the sixth Headmaster of RSGC in 2011. It has been my great privilege to walk alongside almost a generation of young men as they’ve grown up and experienced the extraordinary learning environment and nurturing relationships that are found here.
The Georgian experience has always transcended what is an outstanding academic education. The RSGC Guarantee of Known and Loved is something that is lived everyday at the school. Our Mission is to challenge and inspire each boy to be the best version of himself.
Our students are challenged and supported academically, athletically, artistically, socially, and emotionally. The best version of himself is a man of character. The best version of himself is an inquirer and a critical thinker. The best version of himself is engaged in a breadth of experiences and understands what it feels like to commit to being the best. The best version of himself is cultivated in authentic relationships with outstanding teachers who are passionate about their students.
The best version of himself is Georgian.
Royal St. George’s College is a great school and that greatness is evidenced by the boys we ‘grow up’ into great young men, who go into the world and make their communities better. There is an intangible quality to a great school; something you can sense when you walk in the door. You can feel it in the sense of community and the culture of respect; it’s the esprit de corps and the sense of pride and belonging among the students.
I welcome you to visit Royal St. George’s College and see, feel, and understand for yourself, the benefits of the Georgian experience. I look forward to meeting you and your son.
Sincerely,
Stephen Beatty ‘86
Headmaster
View from the Layby
I launched The View From The Layby as a way to share my thoughts and reflections with our community. The name comes from my favourite place on campus, the Layby, where I stand each morning to greet our boys as they arrive. That daily ritual is more than a routine; it is a reminder that school is a safe, steady place where each student is known and loved. This newsletter offers a window into what I see, think about, and feel as we walk alongside our students during these important years of their lives.
We launched The View From The Layby as a way for me to share my thoughts and feelings with the community. As I was pondering what to call the missive, I settled on The View From The Layby.
Last week, Thursday, May 25 marked the final whole-school Evensong for the year. As is tradition, the Headmaster addressed the school community. We wanted to share his address, here, with our broader community.
In a sure and personal sign of the continued return of pre-pandemic fixtures, I hit the highway over March Break and drove to south Florida. This road trip is a tradition in my family and allows me hours of meditative time staring at the Interstates, and lots of time for audiobooks and podcasts.
Upon entering See House, as you glance left, you see on the door of my office, a shadow box containing my Grade 4 blazer, circa 1976. Pinned to the blazer is a letter dated March 26, 1976, informing my parents that I had “satisfied the requirements for admission to Saint George’s College [not yet Royal] and will be admitted to Grade Four in September.”
Over the past weeks, I’ve had the great privilege of reading the report cards of all of our students. It would be a stretch to say that I read every word with great attention, but I do read them all. It’s an opportunity to spend a few minutes with each student, which I love to do, and I feel it’s important I read anything that has my name on the bottom of it.
Royal St. George's College is an independent school for boys located in The Annex neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Our mission is to challenge and inspire each of our students to become the best version of himself.
