Elevate Your Impact: The Smart Way to Support RSGC Through Donor Advised Funds (DAFs)

At Royal St. George's College, we believe in the power of knowledge and duty. Our goal is to challenge and inspire every student to achieve their full potential. We rely on the generosity of our community to maintain high standards in scholarship and service, and we want to help you make your contributions as efficient and impactful as possible.

If you have a Donor Advised Fund (DAF), it's one of the simplest and most tax-effective ways to support our mission.

What is a DAF, and Why Use It for RSGC?

A Donor Advised Fund acts like a personal charitable savings account. You contribute assets, often receiving an immediate tax deduction, and your funds can grow tax-free. You can then recommend grants from your DAF to qualified charities like RSGC whenever you choose.

Giving to RSGC through a DAF is a financially smart way to support the College, reflecting our belief that knowledge matters by encouraging purposeful and tax-efficient giving. When you contribute to a DAF, you receive an immediate tax deduction, even if the grant to RSGC is made later. The funds within the DAF grow tax-free. This flexibility in timing is especially beneficial for financial planning, particularly when donating complex or appreciated assets like stock, as it helps avoid capital gains tax. This maximizes the resources available to help each Georgian become their best self.

Under the Income Tax Act, registered Canadian charities are generally exempt from paying tax on their investment income and capital gains, provided those funds are used for charitable purposes.

Key Benefits for RSGC Donors:
  • Immediate Tax Deduction: Receive a tax break for your DAF contribution right away, regardless of when the grant is sent to RSGC.
  • Tax-Free Growth: Funds in the DAF are invested and grow without being subject to taxes, potentially increasing the ultimate gift to the College.
  • Avoid Capital Gains: Donating appreciated stock or securities through your DAF allows you to bypass capital gains tax while claiming the fair market value as a deduction.
  • Administrative Simplicity: Recommend a grant to RSGC with minimal paperwork, often through a simple online portal, making the act of service convenient.
  • Separation of Timing: Gives you the flexibility to contribute large sums in high-income years, then distribute grants to RSGC over time.
Key Benefits of DAF Grants to RSGC:
  • Unrestricted, Flexible Support: DAFs typically deliver cash grants that can be immediately deployed to areas of greatest strategic need, directly supporting our Annual Fund and operating budget.
  • Administrative Efficiency: The College receives one consolidated grant from the DAF provider, significantly reducing administrative time and costs associated with processing numerous complex non-cash gifts.
  • Higher Gift Value: By facilitating the donation of appreciated stock, DAFs help donors avoid capital gains tax, encouraging them to make larger, more impactful gifts to the school.
  • Long-Term Stability: DAFs help diversify our revenue streams, ensuring a more stable and predictable source of philanthropic funding for the future of the College.
