Grade 7 STEM Students Bring Creativity to Life in Junior School Musical Design Challenge

This week, Grade 7 STEM students launched into their first collaborative design challenge, building the props and sets for this year’s Junior School musical, Willy Wonka Jr.
Each student, tasked with one prop, began with their own creative vision, brainstorming ways to bring the world of the Chocolate Factory to life. After hearing directly from the show’s directors, Ms. Johnson and Mr. Lebane, students met their first real-world design constraints, sparking the start of many feedback-driven design cycles ahead.

By the end of the session, partners were combining ideas, asking thoughtful questions, and revising their plans together. As a class, we reflected on how good design is always evolving, and how staying open to change makes the final product stronger.

Over the coming weeks, students will explore structural design, internal and external forces, and scaling as they turn their ideas into functional, stage-ready props. We can’t wait to see how their understanding of STEM and of teamwork shapes what they create!
