Kids Lit Quiz: Super Readers

There’s a club for every interest at RSGC, from outdoor games and fitness to robotics and cooking. And for those boys who are avid readers, there is the Kids Lit Quiz club, which includes the added bonus of competition.
This year, eight boys from Grades 5 to 8 made up the Kids Lit Quiz club. They read on their own time and “trained” during their weekly club meetings. In preparation for the annual literature quiz, coach Catherine Kirkland, Head of the Junior School, gave them quizzes that mimicked the actual competition.

The hard work paid off because the more experienced of the two teams that entered the competition – Jack Beatty, Charlie Botterell, Jacob Lloyd and Oscar Tiplady – qualified for Nationals and finished in third place.

“I’m very proud of them – our boys played very well,” said Ms. Kirkland. “It was stiff competition. There were 91 teams at the preliminary event and the boys finished in the top five! It was anybody’s game. We could have won or lost on a couple of questions.”
Ms. Kirkland is not only thrilled with the results, but also that the boys are so passionate about reading.

“These boys get along so well because they can talk about the books they’ve read and it’s so lovely to hear boys discussing their reading,” she said. “They get excited about books, which is great. Reading should never be a chore. It should always be a pleasure.”

Charlie Botterell, Grade 8, has been involved in the club for two years. It’s a perfect fit for him because “I like trivia and I like books, which go together really nicely.” He also enjoys being a member of a team.

“There are four of us on a team,” said Charlie. “We each like different things, so between us, we’ve read a lot of books.”

When asked how he felt during the competition, Charlie’s first response was unexpected:

“Hungry,” he said.
