Behind the Scenes at The Golden Ticket

The cast of this year’s Junior School play, The Golden Ticket, delighted the crowd for three performances in the Black Box Theatre, but it was the boys behind the scenes who ensured that the show went off without a hitch.
Several Junior and Senior School boys worked in lighting and sound, while Grade 9 students Nicholas Woollcombe and Gavin Taylor worked as Stage Managers to get the set, props and actors ready in between scenes. Gavin, who acted in the Senior School play a few weeks earlier, performed in every Junior School play since he started at the College in Grade 4.

“I was kind of sad after my last Junior School play, so this was a unique opportunity to still be involved,” said Gavin. “It was a new perspective for me and there’s just so much you have to think about.”

One of the most challenging parts about changing the set between scenes is working in the dark.

“It’s really tricky because you basically have to do it blind, with touch,” said Gavin. “It’s also scary when you’re trying to get a scene off and on. There’s just so much to think about and remember.”

That’s why communicating with the other members of the crew is so important. They have headphones and can talk to each other behind the scenes.

Gavin loves being involved in the Junior School play and will continue to do so in any capacity.

“I really enjoyed it and if Ms. Turner is happy to have me back, I will readily come back and help with that role or any other role,” said Gavin, who also went to all of the rehearsals and helped the actors learn their lines.

Now that is dedication!
