A Community Dinner

On April 28, the RSGC community joined together to plan, prepare and serve a meal to the homeless at St. Thomas’s Anglican Church as part of the Friday Food Ministry program.
RSGC has had a partnership with the church for about a decade, with a small group of boys heading over every Friday to help feed approximately 125 guests. But on this special Friday in April, the entire community gets involved – boys, parents, siblings, staff and faculty.

Dianne Ryan, Assistant to the Headmaster, has been bringing her two daughters to this evening for over five years and loves going for several reasons.

“It’s important to give back to those who are less fortunate and help the community,” said Dianne. “I also love being with our boys and working with them on something that’s a bigger picture in the community. Watching them interact – especially the younger boys – is a wonderful experience, for them and for me.”

Dianne and the other volunteers get right into it, setting up tables, handing out food, washing dishes, chopping vegetables,  cleaning up the kitchen, and putting the tables and chairs away at the end of the night. And nobody minds getting his or her hands dirty.

“It’s a very rewarding opportunity for everyone,” said Dianne. “It certainly makes you very appreciative and more understanding of other people in the community.”
