After a long break from school athletics, the members of the Senior Volleyball Team made a triumphant return to the court during their fall season. Playing the difficult Division 1 against UCC, St. Michael’s, St. Andrew’s and Appleby, the Senior Volleyball team dominated the field to go undefeated against their opponents.
The members of the team were hungry for the win as they were returning to the court as D2 U16 CISAA Champions. Knowing they were going to play D1 this season, the athletes returned to school ready for the challenge and to take the next step in their athletic careers. As the team included almost all players from the U16 group, students were able to continue to grow the bond with their teammates and strive to be the best. It's no surprise that many season highlights for the athletes came from the final, nail-biting match against St. Andrew’s College. “The last point of that game is what I remember the most, just tipping the ball over the net to win the match” said Mitch Elaschuck ‘22, who played as a power hitter for the team. While there were only six players on the court at the time, the athletes also recognized that being successful is a team effort. “Bench players staying active and noticing their role in the team’s energy is an important part of the team and should not be overlooked”, said Mitch and David Newton ’22. “Coach Turner also helped a lot of see things in ourselves that we wouldn’t have otherwise, he made us better”, David shared. The team also helped each other off the court, from waking up for early morning practices or staying up late together to study for a test. “The team helped each other stay motivated and made sure we were all being supported academically” explained Mitch. While this was the last season for many team members, they will be succeeded by a motivated group of athletes. “We’ve been running futures games where the Grade 11s had a chance to play Grade 10s who will compete for spots,” Coach Turner explains. Looking to next year, Dougie Bell ‘23 says he’s excited to “continue the leadership shown by this year’s Grade 12s and pass down the older players drive for success and passion for the game”.
