Fulford Debate

RSGC hosts Fulford Debating Tournament
RSGC hosts the Fulford Debate Tournament on Saturday, October 29, 2022.
We need parent volunteer debate judges!

About the Fulford Tournament
RSGC is proud to be a member of the prestigious Fulford Debate League, a group of eighteen Ontario independent schools. The league holds three debate tournaments annually. Every seven years, each school takes a turn hosting a tournament. This is our year to host this huge event. There will be up to 80 student competitors; 20 coaches; three rounds of debate, with 18 classroom debates running concurrently in each round, and with four adult judges in each classroom (a total of 72 adult judges).

About Volunteering
A debate judge evaluates the persuasiveness of the student debaters by filling in a given score sheet. Judges are briefed on how to judge the debates on the morning of the tournament. Judges are typically RSGC parents, grandparents, alumni, and community members. Judges need NOT have had any experience in debate or judging student debate. The briefing is thorough. The job requires, essentially, simply a careful attention to the students as they speak, and a thoughtful evaluation of whether or not their arguments are persuasive.

We need 72 volunteers to commit to 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Snacks and lunch will be provided.

This is an important event for students and our community, and its success depends on parent and alumni volunteers. It’s a great opportunity to spend the day with other parents and members of the community and to see students engage in a day of debate. Your support is very much appreciated! If you’d like to volunteer or if you have any questions, please email Trena Evans at tevans@rsgc.on.ca or Alison Hart at ahart@rsgc.on.ca.
