A Year Inside the Perimeter

By Nathan Chow, Senior School Physics
This school year, I’ve been afforded the opportunity to challenge my teaching practice at Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (PI), in Waterloo. PI is a leading centre for scientific research, training and educational outreach.
Their outreach team has been creating educational science resources for teachers across the globe for the last decade. They’ve been in partnership with the Ministry of Education for the last three years with the mandate to improve science education and share the wonder of it with students, teachers and the general public. A conservative estimate has PI’s resources reaching over 10 million students around the world in the last year alone.

The last five months have been a mix of collaborative authorship, leading talks and workshops, travel and creative side projects. It’s definitely been a sharp departure from being in the classroom! Here’s a snapshot of some of the work I’ve been doing:

Late last year, I interviewed players from the Ottawa Senators for a project to create short physics videos to be played during breaks in their games. If you’ve ever wonder how Karlsson’s saucer pass could be physically possible, we can explain that! There are plans to expand this initiative to soccer and cricket, to bring scientific curiosity to the world’s biggest audiences.

Earlier this month, I ran four workshops in Liverpool, UK for the Association for Science Education to help improve science teaching across the pond. In February, I’ll be in Iqaluit for a week to collaborate with indigenous educators up North.

It’s been a wonderful sabbatical. I get to talk shop with passionate educators from around the world. I get to help create resources that will be used millions of times in the future. I get time to reflect on my last six years of teaching and wonder what the next years may look like.

As great as it has been to do these things, RSGC has taught me to always strive to become the best version of myself, so I can give back the boys. I can’t wait to bring these experiences back next year. I miss my colleagues, students and classroom. RSGC is a special place that I can’t wait to come home too. See you all in September!
