Gym Floor Refresh

Over the two-week Christmas break, the gym floor got a facelift – and it was quite the process. It took about four days of sanding to remove the existing finish and game lines, which was followed by a thorough cleaning and a first coat of the new sealer.
The bare floor was then marked with tape for the new lines and prepped for painting. Next came several coats of paint. The process was completed by the removal of the tape and the application of three more coats of the new water-based, high-gloss finish.

A welcome change is that the new lines on the main basketball and volleyball courts are wider and much clearer on the lighter floor.

“The main court basketball lines weren’t quite thick enough, so it was easy to get lost and step out of bounds,” said Athletics Director Steve Turner. “And yellow volleyball lines on a yellowed floor were very difficult to see.”

While the floor now looks shiny and new, the biggest change is the new Knights logo at centre court and the Knights wording at both end lines.

“Following the branding of last year, it was important for us to ensure the colours and logo were properly displayed on the new floor,” said Mr. Turner, who says the new floor actually makes the gym look and feel bigger and brighter.

Like the previous floor, the new floor will be screened and coated annually, helping it to last another eight to ten years.
