Starting the Day off Right

January is dark, cold month and can be a difficult one to get through. So, after a successful pilot project last year, RSGC’s Mental Health and Wellness Week in the Senior School involved Starting the Day off Right for the second straight year.
The day began with a period “zero”, during which the boys could spend 45 minutes doing activities to help get them through the day. They could choose from sleeping in, snuggling with dogs, exercising in the FTC, playing basketball in the gym, eating a healthy breakfast in Ketchum Hall, doing yoga in the dojo, meditating in the chapel, studying in the library or even getting a massage on one of the days. Classes began at 8:50 am, with the boys feeling a lot more refreshed, relaxed and rejuvenated.

Here is what some of the students had to say about Starting their Day off Right

Jack de Aragon, Grade 9: I loved sleeping in. It helps keep me alert. It was my favourite thing to do all week.

Aaron Brady, Grade 9: One day, I went to play basketball. It was fun to play with my friends before the day started and wake me up, though I felt tired later. Another day, I went to the library, which was really helpful. I got to study before class that I had a test for and I got some homework done.

Ryan Gross, Grade 10: I went to Ketchum and had breakfast. The food was really good and sometimes I’d take it to go and take it to the DES to get some work done, which was very beneficial because it’s been very busy.

Matthew Wheler, Grade 11: I spent most of my time n the library, just catching up on my work. It was great because I got all of my homework done during my morning period, so I didn’t have to worry about it at the end!

Pierre-Christof Ascherl, Grade 12: I started off my morning with a massage on the Friday – I enjoyed it a lot. I was almost like sleeping in! It made me feel so prepared for school.

Matthew Furnish, Grade 12: I enjoyed playing basketball in the gym – it was great to spark your mind. Usually I get to school at 8:00 am and have a coffee, but this was a much healthier way to start the day. I felt much more refreshed getting to class and I felt much better for first period.

Denis Miller, Grade 12: I liked the dogs. It was a relaxing experience. It was a nice way to end the week too, especially after the exams, which was so high stress. It was definitely a better transition than a regular morning. It felt much more relaxing than a regular day.
