The Class of 2018’s Ryan Hamilton went on a family vacation to Hawaii this past summer. But instead of spending the entire three weeks as a tourist, he spent half of the trip competing at the 2nd International History Olympiad – where he finished in fifth place in the individual overall standings.

Ryan, who won 10 medals – four gold, two silver and two bronze in categories including Recent History, Naval History, Visual History and the Cold War – qualified for the exclusive event, which was held July 18-24,  through International History Bee and Bowl events with RSGC during the year.

And he’s already right back at it.

“I made an announcement at assembly this morning to get the team together for the Bowl this year,” said Ryan, who explained that the Bee is the individual event, while the Bowl is the team event. “It goes throughout the year.”

Ryan, who is keeping his medals in a heap inside his Bee trophy, was thrilled to be so successful at an international event.

“It was quite fun and even the most intense matches were relatively light-hearted,” he said. “There were a lot of people there who were also quite good and it was really fun to compete there.”

The highlight for Ryan, however, was that the last few days of the competition were held on the historic deck of the USS Missouri in Pearl Harbour.
Congratulations, Ryan!
